Felting

•June 23, 2009 • Leave a Comment

So the other night as I was trying to fall asleep, knitting projects were running through my head (who says that?!). Anyway, I had the idea of a felted clutch, and this wonderful picture popped into my head.  Rarely when a picture pops in my head am I able to bring it to life.  This time, however, was different…. I present to you: the felted clutch.

New Knit & Recycled Yarn

•June 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I know in my last two posts I’ve been blabbing about the cashmere yarn I recently purchased…and now I finally have some pictures to post of what I have created with it!

Although I’m not really into the whole fingerless mitten get-up, these are actually very nice.  The yarn is incredibly soft and warm, and I think these will be great once Fall rolls around.  They’re for sale in my Etsy shop… perfect!

As this is my first time buying and using recycled yarn, I would like to say just how amazing it is.  I have some yarn that I’ve aquired from taking apart some of my old sweaters, but haven’t gotten around to using anything with it yet.  The idea of recycled yarn is something that is so awesome to me.  I know everyone has old sweaters that don’t ever get worn sitting in their closet. And I know there are sweaters that exist in this world that are so ugly that no one should ever wear them (see evidence on Jake below).

But these ugly and old sweaters can turn into beautiful things! So I’m urging everyone who knits or does things with yarn to buy recycled yarn, or unravel old sweaters (it’s pretty fun, actually).  Not only is it good for the wallet, it’s also great for the environment. Yay recycling!!!

Cashmere Yarn

I’m knitting with my cashmere yarn right now, and it is heavenly.  This is my first time knitting with cashmere, and I’m in love.  It’s soooo soft and feels so good in my hands.  I’m hoping to be done with my project by the weekend, so pictures will be up by then. I’m happy at how quickly this project is working up, and glad that I’ve got a day off work this week to get a lot of work done on it.

On another note, I recently discovered that cashmere comes from a goat. That’s right – a goat called the Cashmere Goat (creative, right?)

yayyyyy I am so so so so happy to be finished with this scarf!

P6140043 The ridiculous thing is that it’s probably one of the easiest patterns ever – super easy to memorize, nothing tricky about it – I just had a hard time getting into it. Anyway, it’s over and done with now. YAY!

Blogging Absence

•June 13, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I would like to apologize to all of my devoted readers. All 3 of them. I have been busy with lots of other things and blogging has not been one of them. But I’m back (I hope!).

Yesterday we hit the “50 days to go” mark for the wedding. The majority of the plans are taken care of – now I just have to wait to get my dress back from being hemmed, find some shoes, and take care of a few other details.  Jake’s wedding ring came in the mail a couple of days ago, and he’s been trying it on with pride. So cute. I’m thinking one of our wedding pictures should totally be a “merging of the rings/with these powers combined”….you know, Captain Planet style.

captain_planetWe’ll see.

My knitting is coming along very slowly, to say the least. I did however, purchase two skeins of CASHMERE yarn at a mere $9/skein from a lovely lady on ETSY. For those that don’t know – that’s dirt cheap for cashmere. It’s recycled yarn, meaning it was at one point a sweater or something, but will now be able to take on a new life keeping someone else warm and cozy. You can find more of her recycled yarns here.

I spoke with my florist Thursday, and am so excited to see the images in my head come to life through her.  My bouquet will look something like this:

Made up of a mixture of dried and fresh lavender, wheat, and perhaps some berries and twigs – I can’t wait! Mine however, will be wrapped with lace from my mom’s wedding dress instead of using satin or something like that. Can’t believe it’s almost here! Very excited & a little stressed as well – but everything is coming together!

Craigslist Awesomeness

When scouring the depths of craigslist in search of new friends, please keep this guy in mind:

whoops. Sorry about that.

Anyway. Jake got me a bike. It’s really cool. And all blue. And made by the company Blue. I enjoy riding my bike, but I hate riding my bike on the road with cars. People are stupid. And I’m scared that I’m going to get run over. But I’m trying to enjoy it. I only go with Jake – never alone (mostly because I’m a wuss) but it’s fun. The clips were pretty easy to get the hang of except a couple of days ago when I unclipped my right foot and then fell right on my knee.

Rookie mistake.

Wilson & Chrissy came to visit – they are awesome. I sent out our wedding invitations – so glad to have that done! I can’t believe we’re getting married 10 weeks from tomorrow….pretty crazy!

I started knitting bobbles last night for the first time. If you don’t know what that means, I’m not surprised.

I also joined Twitter. Not quite sure what I think of it. I actually don’t understand it. But if you’d like to stalk me, it’s http://twitter.com/jaykayknits. Stalk away!
